USL League Two – Mid Atlantic Division | June 9
Delaware Ospreys hosted West Chester United at Abessinio Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware, in a key Mid Atlantic Division matchup.
Pre-Match
The Delaware Ospreys entered the match looking to extend their winning run after a 3–1 road victory over Eagle FC on June 2. With a 2-2-1 record, Delaware sat sixth in the Mid Atlantic Division heading into the contest.
West Chester United arrived in strong form, riding a three-match winning streak after a slow start to the season that saw them lose their opening two matches. Sitting fourth in the table, West Chester were aiming to continue their climb toward the playoff positions.
First Half
The opening minutes saw the Ospreys on the front foot, applying early pressure and earning a corner kick inside the first three minutes. Delaware registered their first real chance in the eighth minute, when a header flashed just wide of the post.
Containing West Chester’s attack is never an easy task, and the visitors found their first opportunity in the 11th minute, as Tyler Flynn’s effort narrowly missed the target.
Moments later, West Chester capitalized on a defensive miscue. A long ball out of the back led to a turnover, allowing Ronan Sullivan to quickly transition into attack. Sullivan slipped a pass into the path of Funsia Donzo, whose initial chance bounced out to Luca Mazzola at the top of the box, Mazzola’s shot ricocheted off the left post via. Donzo reacted first, tucking the rebound home in the 12th minute to open the scoring.
Delaware attempted to respond quickly, creating a few looks at goal, but none seriously troubled West Chester goalkeeper Valentin Kneis.
West Chester continued to apply heavy pressure, and another ball over the top down the left flank sparked their second goal. Shawn Tanaka drove forward and delivered a cross into the box, where a clever dummy run from Garry Zhang allowed the ball to fall to Donzo. The forward made no mistake, firing a first-time finish into the net in the 20th minute.
Donzo nearly completed a first-half hat trick, but two clear chances were denied, one by the Delaware goalkeeper and another cleared off the line by an Ospreys defender.
Delaware struggled to test Kneis until late in the half, when the goalkeeper was forced into action with two near identical saves before producing an outstanding reaction stop in the 45th minute to preserve West Chester’s two-goal advantage at the break.
Second Half
The second half followed a similar pattern, with West Chester continuing to dominate possession and attacking opportunities as shots and corner kicks piled up. A third goal appeared inevitable.
Donzo remained influential, nearly adding an assist when his cross to the back post found Matteo Mazzotta, whose effort was turned away by the Delaware goalkeeper.
West Chester finally extended their lead in the 76th minute, as William Kelly reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner kick and slotted it home.
Delaware managed to pull one back with the final kick of the match in the 95th minute. A quickly taken free kick caught the West Chester defense off guard, sending Liam Penny through on goal. Penny calmly rounded the goalkeeper and finished into the open net to close out the scoring.
Full Time
After taking the lead early, West Chester United controlled the match for long stretches, delivering an impressive performance to extend their winning streak to four matches.
Delaware will look to bounce back when they host the Ocean City Nor’easters on June 13, having fallen 5–1 to the division leaders in the reverse fixture.
