Christos FC vs Lionsbridge FC

USL League Two – Chesapeake Division Match Recap | May 16

Christos FC hosted Lionsbridge FC in their 2026 USL League Two home opener at UMBC, with late drama deciding an entertaining Chesapeake Division clash.

Pre-Match

Christos FC entered the match riding high after a thrilling 5–4 away victory over Loudoun United 2 in their season opener. Lionsbridge FC, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a 1–1 draw against Virginia Beach FC.

Christos are looking to build early season momentum in their attempt for a playoff return for the first time since their inaugural USL League Two season in 2022. Lionsbridge, no strangers to success, came in as one of the division’s most consistent sides, having finished first in the Chesapeake Division three times over the past four seasons.

First Half

The opening 15 minutes saw both sides battle for control, with Lionsbridge earning an early corner that immediately tested the Christos back line.

A costly Lionsbridge turnover at midfield proved decisive in the 17th minute. Jalen Keller intercepted the pass and drove forward before releasing Christian Correa down the left. Correa took the ball onto his left foot and fired a low shot toward goal. The Lionsbridge goalkeeper got a hand to the effort but couldn’t prevent it from crossing the line despite a desperate goal-line clearance attempt. Correa’s strike gave Christos a 1- 0 advantage.

Lionsbridge responded quickly and nearly found an equalizer when Cristian Ortiz broke through one-on-one, but Christos goalkeeper Jackson Boonmast produced a crucial leg save to preserve the lead.

Christos continued to look dangerous down the left flank, with Correa forcing another save from distance that resulted in a corner kick. Lionsbridge came agonizingly close to leveling the match in the 38th minute when a header from a corner rattled off the crossbar.

Just before halftime, Correa nearly doubled his tally with a curling effort that drifted inches wide. Lionsbridge appealed for multiple penalties throughout the half, but the referee remained unmoved as Christos carried their narrow lead into the break.

Second Half

Lionsbridge came out with renewed intensity after halftime. Santiago Hoyos tested Christos early, forcing Andrew Mattingly into a sharp save from close range before sending another effort wide minutes later. The pressure paid off in the 54th minute. A loose ball inside the box fell to Joshua Baker, who calmly slotted a first-time finish into the bottom right corner to make it 1-1.

Lionsbridge continued to press, with Mattingly called into action again on a near-post free kick and a long-range strike. Christos looked to counter through substitute Samuel Walker, whose hold-up play helped relieve pressure, though his best shot towards goal was dragged wide.

Hoyos had a golden opportunity to put Lionsbridge ahead late on, rounding the goalkeeper but sending his shot just wide of the open net.

Late Drama

Deep into stoppage time, Christos found the decisive moment. Samuel Walker carried the ball down the left wing and into the box, shielding it from two defenders before cutting it back centrally. Substitute Nicholas Laffey met the pass with a one-time finish, burying the ball into the bottom right corner in the 90+4 minute to seal a dramatic 2–1 victory.

Full-Time

Christos FC snatched all three points in the dying moments of this Chesapeake Division showdown, thanks to Nicholas Laffey’s late heroics.

Christos return to action on May 20 with a road trip to Virginia Beach FC, before hosting Annapolis Blues FC on May 23.
Lionsbridge FC will look to bounce back at home on May 20 against Virginia Marauders in Newport News, VA.
