MDV Cup Week 2 Recap

Ristozi FC vs Team Senegal DMV

Kickoff: 11:00 AM

I missed the opening kickoff as Ristozi FC took on Team Senegal DMV in Week 2 of the MDV Cup, arriving just in time to see the breakthrough goal. Josh Petty carried the ball down the field before setting up Francis Meyer for a simple tap-in to give Ristozi the early advantage.

Ristozi FC dominated possession throughout the first half and created several dangerous attacking moments. Despite their control, they were unfortunate to concede a late first-half penalty. Team Senegal DMV’s #10 earned the spot kick, which was converted by their goalkeeper – who famously put his phone down, sprinted the length of the pitch, and calmly slotted the penalty home.

Team Senegal DMV were vocal toward the referee all half, picking up several yellow cards within the opening 45 minutes. Despite Ristozi’s dominance, the scoreline was level at 1–1 heading into halftime.

The second half quickly took a turn as Team Senegal DMV’s challenges grew increasingly reckless. Their #18 received a straight red card after a dangerous challenge from behind. Ristozi wasted no time capitalizing on the advantage, scoring twice within minutes. Josh Petty finished off a rebound to restore the lead before Peter Gansallo was played through on goal and calmly placed his effort past the keeper.

Josh Petty would later grab his second goal of the match to make it 4–1 against the 10-man Team Senegal side. Matters continued to worsen for Team Senegal DMV as their #4 received a second yellow card, followed shortly by another straight red for a high tackle along the far sideline.

With player safety becoming a concern, Ristozi head coach Dylan Shepard quickly called his players off the pitch. The referees ultimately made the decision to end the match 15 minutes early.

Key Players – Ristozi FC

  • Josh Petty: Finished with 2 goals and 1 assist, bringing his MDV Cup total to 5 goals in two matches.
  • Peter Gansallo: Played centrally in the absence of Toshi Davis. Found pockets of space and created several chances, unlucky to finish with only one goal.

Key Players – Team Senegal DMV

  • Goalkeeper: Made multiple saves throughout the match and successfully converted the penalty to keep his side level at halftime.

Bowleys Athletic vs Bridgesports Club

Kickoff: 1:00 PM

The Bowleys Athletic vs Bridgesports Club matchup was just as unpredictable as the weather. Based on last week’s results, where Bridgesports Club suffered a 9–0 defeat to Ristozi FC. I anticipated a comfortable Bowleys Athletic win. However, Bridgesports arrived with an entirely different squad, with very few recognizable faces from the previous week.

The first half was tightly contested, with both teams battling for control. Bridgesports Club had the better chances before halftime but were unable to convert.

Bridgesports came out flying to start the second half and were rewarded almost immediately. Kevin Garcia opened the scoring with an acrobatic finish just minutes after the restart. Shortly after, a brief snowstorm halted play for roughly ten minutes.

Once play resumed, Bridgesports Club struck again. Lassana Diakite worked the ball down the right flank before firing a shot on target that the Bowleys goalkeeper couldn’t keep out, doubling the lead.

Bowleys Athletic eventually found attacking momentum and earned a lifeline from the penalty spot. Tyler Reid drew the foul, and Greg Adams calmly converted from 12 yards to make it 2–1.

Bowleys pushed for an equalizer late, creating two excellent chances. Cesar Aayon-Fuentes narrowly missed connecting with a dangerous cross, and Bowleys’ #20 was unable to capitalize on a free kick opportunity as the final whistle sounded.

Key Players – Bowleys Athletic

  • Samuel Adams: Controlled the midfield for large portions of the match, linking play and driving Bowleys forward.

Key Players – Bridgesports Club

  • Nate Lynch: Unlucky not to keep a clean sheet, conceding only from the penalty spot. Made several strong saves and was commanding on set pieces.
